Apparently, some people have misunderstood my feelings that were expressed in my earlier blog posting, "Turning Point." Someone came up to me tonight at the ASL dinner and asked, puzzled, "do you support JKF?" That person was confused by my statement that if I had to choose between a dead Gallaudet student and JKF, I would choose JKF. What I was trying to say is, I don't want to see death at Gallaudet University. If in order to have the hunger strikers live (or to avoid the deaths of any other Gallaudet student), I had to accept JKF, I would.
I had also said JKF was the lesser of two evils. Some people are not familiar with the phrase "the lesser of two evils." An evil is a bad thing. In this case, the first bad (evil) thing is the death of a Gallaudet student. The second bad (evil) thing is JKF. Obviously, JKF is not as bad as the death of a Gallaudet student - therefore, lesser of two evils.

Agreed.
Between student death and JKF, JKF is the lesser evil.
The hunger strike must cease now.
For the good of everyone, especially their worried family and friends.
Yes...hunger strike needs to be stopped!
Where are the parents of these kids??
I leave it to the hunger strikers to decide on their own.
But what I will say is that some situations in life are the equivalent of death--such as if Fernandes becomes president and ruins the lives of thousands of deaf students in the future. She would be stealing part of their lives away from them, killing part of their personalities and their consciousness.
I'm serious. Putting cochlear implants on children born deaf should be outlawed and made a crime. The technology is simply not advanced enough.
Brian post:Putting cochlear implants on children born deaf should be outlawed and made a crime.I agree 100%
Is there a way I can find out the names of the ones one hunger strike?
I disagree.
For most of them they are entering their 3rd week of strike. Their health condition is visible poor, and they are hardly able to take care of themselves.
How in such situation they are able to decide on their own?
Worse, they are surrounded by people, -well fed-, who keep pushing them to continue their hunger strike?
As it ever occurs to anyone they may have family, friends, and they are terribly worried to see them... going on a slow death? These guys aren't loved? They're alone? *NO* .
And all this for JKF? And what the protests are for? Ineffective?
If not now, a person on a job can be removed... LATER. That's why I prefer JKF now. The lesser evil of two.
Because life can NOT be restored, once it fades away.
FInally, what the hunger strike has to do with cochlear implants being outlawed? Sheesh!
Hunger strikes in a country like the United States are ineffective. They're great to make a point, but they don't make things happen.
Case in point, it's been about 3 weeks they are on hunger strike. Nothing happened and barely anyone cares... except students, families and friends.
NOT school officials.
If there are death, only the strikers themselves and the organizers will be blamed for allowing that to happen, if not squarely pushing them to such extremes.
Protests are effective tools. The internet, blogs like these ones are effective tools. Regular media are effective tools.
Not hunger strikes.
I prefer a JKF for the simple reason that the battle can continue for her removal.
So for the cause, on behalf of all terrified families and friends,
The hunger strike must STOP.
NOW.
Can someone propagate these words to them... and pull them out of harms way?
